PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE…….Carolyn Ritter
I want to extend a thank you to everyone who supported me the last two years. It has been an enjoyable experience and I wish your new President, Jeannie Upright a successful two years. We may be small in numbers, but our passion carriers us a long way. I attended Nationals last week in Orlando Florida. I had a great time with my family and NAIW friends. I will post my delegate report later this week.
We had a great breakfast with Senator John Gordner and I will keep everyone posted on the ideas we got from him.
Jeannie has a sign up sheet for the upcoming picnic at Gails. If anyone would like to bring a covered dish, drink or dessert, call her at 326-2343 and let her know.
I hope we can continue to grow in numbers and spread the NAIW message of Education, Professionalism and Networking. Growth will be a main focus of the National NAIW board over the next years. As one generation is leaving a new generation will be taking over, unfortunately the next generation is small in numbers and NAIW is broadening what it has to offer to members, especially in scholarships and education. It is a perfect time to tell co workers about the opportunities within NAIW!!!
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your President and Delegate to the conferences. Our association is well known out there and I know we will continue to be a leader among associations on Pennsylvania.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Ritter

Senate Committee to take up further SSN restrictions
Late this month a Senate panel will consider legislation that passed the House last fall to require state and local government agencies to offer persons applying for licensure or certification to use their driver’s license or non driver’s license identification as an alternative to their Social Security numbers. The bill, HB 2143, further prohibits health insurers from using Social Security numbers for identification.
This legislation is moving in addition to a similar bill that is again before the Senate for its concurrence after the House amended it last week. With some exceptions, SB 601 prohibits any person, business, or government agency from making Social Security numbers public or requiring individuals to submit Social Security numbers to access products or services.
Insurance agencies are exempt from the bill because they are a financial institution subject to the Graham-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA),HIPAA or the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
State Workers ’Comp costs below median but on the rise
Average total costs per workers’ compensation claim increased
steadily in 2004, with claims with 12-months maturity rising by
more than 8 percent, according to a study by the Workers’ Compensation
Research Institute (WCRI). But for more mature claims (2001 claims
evaluated in 2004), the cost per claim was still 10 percent lower than the median of the 13 states studied, the study noted. Shorter periods of lost
time and lower than average medical costs per claim may account for the
states below – median figure, the study said. More details on the study are available from the WCRI website at www.wcrinet.org.
